
SENSORY SUBSTITUTION DEVICE
D Squared worked with the University of Liverpool to develop a research prototype for them, exploring new ways of improving spatial awareness for visually impaired users.
The Sensory Substitution Device was designed to capture visual information from the surrounding environment using depth-sensing camera technology and convert it into an intuitive auditory experience. By translating spatial data into auditory cues, the system provides intuitive feedback that can support orientation, mobility, and spatial awareness.
Working closely with the research team, D Squared was responsible for the design and development of a functional prototype, integrating depth perception hardware, embedded electronics, and high quality speakers into a compact wearable device.
The resulting prototype provided a platform for ongoing research into improving mobility, independence, and quality of life for people living with visual impairment.
