INGRESS PROTECTION TESTING
Ingress protection, or IP, testing is the process that evaluates the ability of products and/or medical devices to resist the ingress of dust and/or water, ensuring their performance in challenging environments. This testing is critical to many applications, such as outdoor lighting, wearable technology, and emergency services equipment. Whether it's shielding them from unexpected rainfall or allowing them to be fully submersed for extended periods of time, IP testing is the unsung hero that prevents what could often be safety-critical failures.

Our workshop is equipped with the necessary tools to conduct water ingress testing to an IPX8 rating, which provides protection against the effects of immersion in water under pressure for extended periods. In fact, we recently collaborated with one of our clients to verify the seal integrity of an electronics enclosure they’re developing; however, due to confidentiality, we can’t share the details of this project yet. That’s why we conducted testing on a waterproof phone case instead.

We tested the waterproof capabilities of the IP68 rated phone case using the immersion tube fixture, a stopwatch, and even a ‘calibrated’ Lotus Biscoff biscuit. Following the 30-minute long one-metre depth immersion trial, we are pleased to confirm that our phone case emerged triumphantly. Not a single droplet entered the enclosure, leaving the biscuit perfectly dry and ready to be enjoyed with a cup of coffee.
